SPIVACKE, HAROLD
SPIVACKE, HAROLD (1904–1977), U.S. music librarian and musicologist. Born in New York, Spivacke studied at New York University and the University of Berlin, where he received his Ph.D. in 1933. He also studied privately with d'Albert and hugo leichtentritt . He was assistant chief of the music division of the Library of Congress from 1934 to 1937 and chief from 1937 until his retirement. The music division was greatly developed under his administration. Spivacke was also a member of various directive and advisory bodies in American and international musicological organizations and president of the Music Library Association from 1951 to 1953; he held offices in the National Music Council and the American Musicological Society.
